Mailmark is Royal Mail’s new state-of-the-art 2D barcode technology. Mailmark compatible franking machines benefit from Royal Mail’s lowest prices, starting from just 38p per letter.
The technology was unveiled in 2013 and is the culmination in £70 million worth of investment. It replaces the old ‘crown and die’ with a machine readable 2D barcode. See examples below:

Mailmark Pre-Pay Reply
Unlike regular franking, Mailmark also allows you to offer your customers Pre-Pay Reply envelopes at standard Mailmark franking rates. These can be used for virtually any purpose from feedback to payment responses to confirmations.
How Does Mailmark Work?
Basically, a simple barcode is added to your letters. This barcode is then read sorting machines to generate detailed mail data. This data is then used to to provide analytics reporting on volume, predicted delivery and overall performance at at no extra cost to you from Royal Mail.
The type of 2D barcode you choose you will determine how much data you can generate.
As you can see above, there are 3 different 2D barcode types. They are:
- Type 7: Minimum physical size: 12 x 12 mm, Customer character capacity: 6 characters
- Type 9: Minimum physical size: 16 x 16 mm, Customer character capacity: 45 characters
- Type 29: Minimum physical size: 8 x 24 mm, Customer character capacity: 25 characters
There are also 2 4-state Mailmark barcodes available, but neither offer space for customer use. The two types are:
- Mailmark barcode L: Number of bars 78; Physical size: Approx. 89mm
- Mailmark barcode C: Number of bars 66; Physical size: Approx. 76.2mm
